New Media and Digital Arts in China

My final project concerns a new Chinese Multimedia movement in the midst of a rapidly modernizing China. I will in particular look at the example of Feng Jiangzhou, who was once a leader of a punk band called The Fly. Since their breakup, he was moved into new digital territories, making music called Digital Hardcore and designing immersive multimedia designs.

Mr. Feng is a central member of Sifenlv New Media Studio along with Zhang Lin.

Zhang Lin is a new media artist who graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2007. She also attended the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Canada on scholarship in Canada, studying new media art under the head of the university. She also received a master degree of digital media at the Rhode Island School of Design.

The work of these two artists is remarkably unique in the context of contemporary Chinese art. By researching this movement, hopefully I can explore the themes of the changing Chinese identity along with the contemporary understanding and use of technology among these artists.
